Policy on the use of generative AI tools

The Review of International Affairs (RIA) recognizes the growing role of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in academic writing and communication. To ensure the integrity and originality of scholarly work, we allow the use of generative AI tools exclusively for language enhancement purposes, such as improving grammar, spelling, punctuation, and clarity of expression.

Use of AI tools for content generation, data analysis, interpretation of results, or drafting substantive sections of manuscripts is not permitted and will be considered a breach of authorship and research integrity policies.

The use of Generative AI or AI-assisted tools to create or alter images and figures in submitted manuscripts is not permitted as well.

Authors who use AI tools for permissible purposes must ensure that the tool was used only for improving language and not for generating original content or analysis and that the final submitted text has been thoroughly reviewed and approved by the authors. The final manuscript must be thoroughly reviewed and approved by all listed authors to confirm the accuracy and authorship of the written content.

If used, AI tool should not be listed as an author. Authors are not required to disclose the use of AI tools used solely for grammar and language correction. However, any use beyond this limited scope must be disclosed at the time of submission and may be subject to editorial review.

The editorial team reserves the right to request clarifications and to reject or retract work where AI use is found to compromise the originality or integrity of the submission.

Reviewing process AI policy statement

The use of large language models or other AI tools to support any aspect of the peer review process, including analyzing manuscripts, drafting reviews, or formulating recommendations, is not permitted. Accordingly, the reviews should not upload reviewed articles or any of their parts into Generative AI tools. The reviewers are allowed only to use AI tools to improve grammar and readability of their reviews.
